About the Individual

Grete KARPFEN was living in Paris and is presumed to have received a Portuguese visa under the authority of Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux or Bayonne in June of 1940.

She crossed into Portugal, where she obtained a US visa in Porto on July 11, 1940. She then resided in Lisbon until her departure for New York on the vessel Siboney in December of that year. She settled in Los Angeles.
